Food Program
The Indian Walk-In Center in cooperation with
Utah Food Bank and Department of Work Force Services provides
food assistance to low-income individuals and families. The
assistance is both short-term, (an immediate three-day food
supply), and long-term (the Food Stamp Program).
Unfortunately, many people seeking emergency
help at the Indian Walk-In Center are not aware of support
services available to them. The Indian Walk-in Center strives to
not only help with immediate needs, but also work with the
individuals and families to establish a client progression plan
and develop long-term strategies. The Food Stamp Program
provides longer term assistance to address multiple needs and
seeks to eliminate crises by helping clients connect with
community service providers. These connections help with a
client's immediate needs and serve as a resource for the future.
Emergency Food Service
Important -- all applicants need proof of citizenship and local
address
Food Pantry
A Low-Income Food Pantry is available for all community members
in need of emergency food supplies. American Indians and Alaska
Natives may also receive assistance by referral from the Indian
Walk-In Center.
Emergency Food Package
A three-day supply of food is available to clients in urgent
need. The Utah Food Bank supplies the majority of the food.
Packages are distributed in allotments of three days' supply
based on household size. You may receive emergency food up to
six times in a twelve month period. The Food Pantry works in
coordination with all food pantries of the Salt Lake area to
prevent duplication of services.
What are Food Stamps?
Food Stamps are used like cash to buy food products. Most
grocery stores accept them. Food Stamps cannot be used to buy
tobacco, alcoholic beverages, items that cannot be eaten, or
already prepared foods. Food stamps can buy vegetable seeds and
plants. Items purchased with Food Stamps are not subject to
sales tax.
The Indian Walk-In Center can assist an individual or a family
to begin the process of obtaining ongoing food assistance
through the Food Stamp Program.
Expedited Food Stamps
Based on qualifications, an individual or family may have needs
that would quality them for Expedited Food Stamps. If a person
does qualify, he or she may receive Food Stamps within seven (7)
calendar days from the date the Department of Work Force
Services receives a Food Stamp application. To be eligible to
receive expedited Food Stamps, you must establish your identity.
